WS-206 Hairspring Restoration

Course dates: Saturday and Sunday, February 16 - 17, 2008

The heart of a mechanical watch is the escapement and the hairspring is central to its accuracy.  Quite often a watch will fail to keep good time because of problems with the hairspring.  This 2 day workshop will show the participants how to correct and realign a hairspring.  Topics will include:

  • Hairspring theory
  • Evaluating the hairspring
  • Removing the hairspring from the staff
  • Truing the hairspring
  • Straitening the hairspring
  • Untangling the hairspring
  • Reinstalling and regulating the hairspring

This workshop is for the advanced student or experienced watchmaker.  All tools and materials will be supplied but the student is encouraged to bring their own tweezers.  At the end of the workshop the student will have a greater understanding of the hairspring, its function and repair procedures.

The workshop will be held at the NAWCC School of Horology on Saturday and Sunday between the hours of 8:30 and 4:30.  This includes two 15 minute breaks and 1½ hours for lunch.

For additional information contact Ted Brachfeld at the NAWCC School of Horology: 717-684-8261, ext. 216.
