WS-124: Dial Restoration and Painting
Course Dates: Jule 21-25, 2008
This five-day workshop is an introduction to dial painting and restoration. Learn how to refurbish that old dial on your favorite clock. Topics covered will include:
- A review of the dials to be restored
- Fabrication of special tools
- Paper dials
- Wooden dials
- Metal dials
- Inking of Roman numerals, chapter rings, etc.
- Corner design painting
- Application of gesso and gold leaf designs on wooden dials
- Application of trademarks
This workshop will enable the student to develop tools and techniques to recover simple metal and wood dials. The class is open to all. All materials and supplies are provided. The student is welcome to bring his or her own dials.
Tools will be available for purchase for those who want to continue dial painting.
Depending on interest a follow on course will be scheduled that will cover Arabic numbers, painting of corner scenes, moons, restoration etc.
The 5-day workshop will be held at the NAWCC School of Horology. The class will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with two 15-minute breaks and 1½ hours for lunch.
