Students' Stories

Tom Kloss

From a very early age, I was interested in what makes mechanical things tick; no pun intended!  I have always attributed it to my German-Swiss heritage.  My secondary school training was as a machinist at the Johnson Technical Institute in Scranton, PA.  With this background I developed a great admiration for fine, intricate machinery.

Upon retiring, I started collecting clocks, but learned very quickly that getting and keeping a collection in working condition made clock collecting a somewhat expensive hobby.  Fortunately, while surfing the net on general clock information, I stumbled across the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors website and saw that the School of Horology offered a one-week course for hobbyists.  Over a period of about two and a half years I completed all the school courses and graduated in October of 2003.

For the past year I’ve been building up a small vintage clock repair business in the Scranton area.  As it turns out, I am busy enough that the business, thankfully, is augmenting my retirement income.

I have always had a little dream tucked away in the back of my mind to own and run a machine shop of sorts.  The clock courses at the School of Horology have given me the training and impetus to realize the attainment of this dream!
