Dianne Swartzkopf

I had been a medical technologist for over 30 years and was definitely ready for a change and also looking for a retirement activity.

My husband and I started collecting antique clocks about 10 years ago, but they usually needed some sort of repair, and it was always difficult to find anyone to work on them.

As a result, they sat silently waiting until someone could be found to repair them.

One Saturday morning I found the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors website on my computer, and I was amazed to see that it was possible to go to school to learn how to repair clocks and watches.  Knowing that I had all those clocks that needed attention, curiosity got the best of me, and I inquired as to what the school had to offer.

I started by signing up for the first clock repair class, C-100, given in December 2001.  I was so impressed with the School, the instructor, and with what I was learning that I came home and resigned from my job so I could go back to school.  I graduated from the Clock Repair Program in October of 2002, having taken all the required courses.

I wouldn’t be able to do what I do now without the training I received at the School.  I opened my own shop in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, about two and a half years ago and never imagined that in such a short time I’d be as busy as I am.  I work from a waiting list and by appointment only so I can create my own schedule.

I think most people dream of having their own business.  Well, my dream came true.  I work very hard, but thoroughly enjoy what I’m doing, and at this time in my life the flexibility that my business allows is very important to me.

I believe that you’ll never get closer to a living piece of history than the heartbeat of an antique clock!
