Arthur Finn

I bought a wonderful 1795 English grandfather clock and after I had it for a couple of years I asked myself, “how does this work?”  Well, the scientist in me prevailed, and I had to know more. After having an interesting conversation with the person who sold me the clock, and hearing about the School of Horology, I contacted the School to make plans to begin my study.

After having been Professor of Medicine and Cell and Molecular Physiology at the University of North Carolina/Chapel Hill School of Medicine for 30 years, I decided it was time to retire. There was a retirement party for me on a Saturday night, and the very next morning I traveled to Columbia to begin studying at the School.

I liked the School a great deal, and felt it was well run with small classes and extremely knowledgeable instructors. After taking clock courses for about a year, I began telling people I knew that soon I’d be repairing clocks.  Then as I prepared to leave the School, I began advertising in the local paper and the yellow pages.

As a result, I developed a clientele almost immediately, and today I have a four-month waiting list of people wanting to have their clocks repaired.  Being retired, I enjoy travel, but actually feel a little guilty when I know there are so many people waiting for me to fix their clocks.

My advice to those considering the profession of horology, “Do it!”  But, in addition, as was mentioned on the first day of classes, not everything can be covered in the School, so be sure to have someone in your area you can confer with when questions arise.
