Bulletin ARTICLE GUIDELINES

Submitted manuscripts should be double spaced, and either typed or on diskette. Preferred formats are MS Word, .rtf or .txt files. No particular length is required, but your topic should be horologically relevant, the writing concise, and the length suitable to the subject matter. Please double check your work for correct spelling of proper names and date accuracy. Your work will be peer-reviewed, and you will receive comments and suggestions from the reviewer and the Editor.

Photographs must be clear and can be either black and white prints or color. The subject should be either horizontally or vertically positioned. Straight-on shots are preferable, but if using a flash, direct it away from the subject to avoid glare; moving a few inches left or right of center can help. Along with watch and clock dial photographs, we strongly encourage photos showing movement details.

Digital photography must be of a resolution high enough to guarantee 266 dpi at 100% scale. Check your digital camera specs before assuming the output will be suitable.

If you use photographs other than your own, show written permission for publication in the Bulletin. When you send your manuscript, include any letters of permission. If you have any questions concerning what is permissible to publish, please don’t hesitate to contact the Editorial Department.

Color photographs are needed for the cover of each issue of the Bulletin. If your article concerns an exceptional clock or watch, and you can provide top quality 35 mm slides or color transparencies or good prints of the item, please send them to us for consideration. For publishing purposes the background in the picture is critical; neutral tones work best.

Illustrations that contain identification labels, numbers, and letters require special attention. If an illustration needs labeling, the untouched original illustration should be photocopied and the labeling drawn on that photocopy. Both the untouched original and the marked photocopy should then be provided. We can enlarge or reduce the labeling to fit the illustration during the page design.

Line drawings should be clear, neat pen and ink drawings. We can insert any necessary labeling.

Captions should be descriptive and of reasonable length. Captions should not take the place of descriptive material in the body of the article.

We prefer to place the credits for photographs and illustrations vertically along the sides of the illustrations. The author’s acknowledgements and any bibliographic material are usually placed at the end of the article.

Footnotes and references: Additional textual material that does not directly relate to the primary subject at hand but that does add to the immediate understanding of the main text, should be considered a footnote and placed either at the bottom of the page where the footnote is mentioned or placed at the end of the article as an endnote. Whenever appropriate, try to incorporate the information into the body of the text. Documentation of the text, both references or a bibliography, should be placed at the end of the article. We use guidelines from the Chicago Manual of Style to list references and bibliographies.

If you use the resources of the National Watch and Clock Museum® and Library and Research Center, please include these references in the acknowledgement of your sources.

Once the article has been reviewed, edited, and prepared in page form, the pages are sent to the author for final approval. Upon receipt of the pages from the author, the article is scheduled for publication.

Please include a short “About the Author” paragraph about your horological interests and how you developed an interest in the subject matter.

Feel free to contact us if we can be of assistance to you with either form or content as you develop your article. Please e-mail the editor at: diana@nawcc.org; call 717-684-5544; or write: Attn: Editor, NAWCC, Inc., 514 Poplar St., Columbia, PA 17512.

CHAPTER HIGHLIGHTS GUIDELINES

Purpose of Reports: To keep NAWCC members informed of local chapter activities and, in doing so, encourage all members to participate in chapter and regional meetings.

Content of Reports:

  • Brief summaries of the educational content of programs and workshops, as well as related activities.
  • All watch, clock, or other horological items discussed should include a brief description of the item(s) without prices.
  • Limit comment on social activities, auctions, and marts.
  • Include future meeting schedules.
  • PLEASE carefully check spelling of chapter members’ names.
  • E-mailed or typewritten, double-spaced manuscripts are preferred, but neatly handwritten reports are permissible.

Size Limit: Not more than 600 words. No more than two meeting reports per chapter will be printed in a given issue of the Bulletin.

Submission: Send reports to: NAWCC, Chapter Highlights, 514 Poplar St., Columbia, PA 17512 or fax: 717-684-0878. E-mail: chaphi@nawcc.org

Editing: The editorial staff will edit each report as needed for length, clarity, spelling, grammar, and conformance to NAWCC policy. Topics subject to editing include pricing, controversy, and discussion of non-horological items. No treasurer's reports will be included in the reports.

Photographs: Photos of both people and horological items are suitable. Captions should be typed or written on a piece of paper and attached to the back of the photo. Names of the people in each picture should be listed from left to right, and the spelling of their names carefully verified. Color or black and white prints are acceptable. Slides or negatives cannot be used. Digital photos will be accepted, but must be high-resolution and have a .jpg or .tif file extension. The recommended dpi is 266 for Bulletin quality. While any number of photographs may be sent, the editorial staff will determine the number published, usually one or two per chapter.

By-line: To give proper credit, all published reports will include the name of the person who reports the activities of the chapter meeting. Be sure to include your name on your report.

Deadlines are the LAST POSSIBLE DATE (see Deadlines) on which material can be accepted for a designated issue.
