About the Cover
Our front cover features an early nineteenth-century
watch made for the Chinese market by Edouard Juvet of Switzerland—one of
150 items, mostly watches, that the National Watch and Clock Museum
currently holds on loan from the Harris M. Fishbon Collection of the
California Academy of Sciences. An Antiquorum auction catalog,
Important Collectors’ Wristwatches, Pocket Watches,and
Clocks—25-11-2006, provides some historical background on the
Chinese watch trade of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and on
this maker: “The firm of Juvet, founded by Edouard Juvet (1820-1883) was
the fourth of the great houses [of Fleurier, Switzerland] working for
China and it quickly rose in importance. Edouard Juvet settled in Buttes
in 1842, moving to Fleurier in 1844, and organized a sales house in
Shanghai about 1856. Like the others [Fleurier watchmakers specializing
in decorative watches for the Chinese market—Bovet, Vaucher, Borel, and
Dimier & Cie] Juvet manufactured the caliber invented by Bovet and also
had cases made by the artisans of Geneva.”
The cover watch is key wind with a brass movement, white
porcelain dial, and a gilt silver case with a glass crystal bordered by
rows of pearls. The enameled scene on the back cover shows four men,
including a game hunter, riding an elephant, and a tiger attacking them.
The auction catalog noted above states of China-trade watch quality, “we
are struck by its remarkably high level of artistry and precision.” And
continues to note that after this important high point in decorative
watchmaking the art of decoration declined and eventually disappeared.
It is certainly true that in the Museum watch gallery these beautiful
enameled objects stand out like sparkling jewels, and the allure of this
particular watch served it well in securing a well-deserved spot on this
month’s cover.
