About the Cover

NAWCC Western New York Chapter 13 bought the Abner Jones clock featured on the cover in 1979 and drove it to Columbia that year. In the June 1979 Bulletin, No. 200, Chapter 13 President Evan Edwards wrote about the clock and the chapter's fundraising efforts that resulted in this gift to the Museum. We present this clock in the Bulletin again as a representative example, in the permanent collection, of the upcoming Upstate New York State clocks exhibit. Little is known of Abner Jones but it is believed that he made as many as 100 clocks. Examples of his clocks have similar, but not identical, movements. The dials on Jones' clocks are two piece; the chapter ring is part of the door painting and the dial's center has rack and snail striking with rack pin locking.

Upstate New York clocks of this era are beautiful; they were marketed to the wealthy and reflect an upper class sensibility. We are extremely fortunate to have Russ Oechsle, co-author of An Empire in Time, as a guest curator for the upcoming exhibit, which will provide a rare view of a broad selection of these clocks outside of New York state.
