About the Cover

On the front cover, Close-up of the Hamilton Court tower clock dials. The display dials for this magnificent astronomical clock were added to the 12th century estate known as Hampton Court in 1540, and include lunar, solar, and zodiac dials. See page 405 for an article about the gearing for the dials, the clock's historical background, and the many incarnations of gearing over the centuries, up to the 1940s, when the present gearing was rebuilt.
