The subjects of this revolving band clock are the Three Graces of the Greek mythology. The depiction of Aglaia the Brilliant, Thalia the Verdent and Euphrosyne the Inner Joy was initially popular during the late 18th century, and revived a century later. The example seen here is a copy of a piece made by Falconet, c.1780, which is now in the collection of the Louvre Museum. An eight-day brass round plate movement sits inside the urn. The silvered band revolve clockwise with the extended finger of the right woman serving as the clock hand. The clock strikes the hour and half hour on bells.
