Andre Charles Boulle (1642-1731) was a sculptor and case maker in 17th century France, who perfected the use of marquetry made with tortoise shell and brass. Today, this is generally referred to as boulle work. Boulle's case styles have been copied well into the 20th century by French cabinet makers using the same methods of construction as those used in the early 18th century. The allegorical figures used to decorate the case represent Minerva and the Three Fates spinning the Thread of Destiny. These figures can be found on several boulle marquetry cases. The brass mounts of this case have been gilded and are stamped HPR on the reverse. The clock measures 50"x22"x10", not including the wall bracket. The 8-day brass movement by Vincenti is made with square plate Donated by New York University |
