In his lifetime, Daniel Drawbaugh had been called the "Edison" and 'Wizard" of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He is recognized as having invented the telephone prior to Alexander Graham Bell's patent of 1876. Although Drawbaugh had claimed to have had invented the telephone by 1874, he did not receive a patent until 1880. After months of deliberation in the Supreme Court, the judges voted in favor of Bell by one vote majority in 1888 (two could not vote due to owning stock in Bell). Though Drawbaugh was acknowledged as the original inventor of the telephone, the case was awarded to Bell as a result of his earlier filed patents. This unique model was made by Daniel Drawbaugh for his patent application of a new magnetic clock. Patent #367898 was issued to him in August of 1887. The clock was designed to run with power produced by an earth battery, however, it proved to be unreliable. Very few of his electric clocks are known to exist. Donated by Art Bjornestad #19853 |
