The double twelve hour dial indicates that this clock was most likely produced around the time Japan adopted the twenty-four hour European system of timekeeping. It does, however, retain traditional elements of Japanese horology. The hand of the clock remains stationary, while the dial rotates. As the dial revolves, pins extending from the back of the hour plate trip the strike train at the appropriate ties. The left aperture displays the twelve signs of the Zodiac, and the right aperture display the elements of Celestial Stems. Together they display the sexagenery, or sixty year cycle.
