Lantern Clock, c. 1720
Maker Unknown
Japan

Unlike our other lantern clocks, this clock only has a single foliot. The dial is stationary and labeled with the symbols for the 12 Japanese hours; Rat (Midnight), Bull, Tiger, Hare, Dragon, Serpent, Horse (Noon), Goat, Ape, Cock, Dog, and Boar. These are the twelve terrestrial branches which are also used in calendars.
